Detailed Installation Guide for Exterior Stucco

 

The installation of EIFS, also as known as Exterior Stucco, calls for many technical skills to be completed so the finish can be strong and look great at the same time. Surface Preparation

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Exterior Stucco Preparation

The surface must be prepared before the EIFS installation, cleaning it from dirt, dust, or other impurities. Repair cracks and imperfections on the surface in order to provide a smooth finish for applying the EIFS system.

Holistic Contracting Tip: Make sure the substrate is clean and dry, uncontaminated, to avoid adhesion problems.

Step 2: Installing the Insulation Boards

The first layer of the EIFS is an insulation board composed primarily of expanded polystyrene. Typically, the boards are cut to fit wall dimensions and applied using adhesive or mechanical fastening.

  1. Apply adhesive to the back of the insulation board and/or the wall
  2. Put pressure with an effort to push the board thoroughly to the substrate and make it even.
  3. Use mechanical fasteners where necessary to further reinforce the boards.

Holistic Contracting Tip: Offset the insulation boards, staggering the joints, to break thermal bridging and get more efficiency from the insulation.

Step 3: Application of the Base Coat

This is followed by the laying of the base coat over the insulation board, because this cement coating will protect and allow for embedding the reinforcing mesh properly.

  1. Mix the base coat material as per manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Apply a layer of the base coat over the insulation board, using a trowel.
  3. Embed the reinforcing mesh into the wet base coat until fully encapsulated.

Step 4: Laying the Reinforcing Mesh

The reinforcing mesh gives strength and resistance to the EIFS system; without it, the cement will crack, not bond properly and reduce the overall durability.

  1. Cut the mesh to the required length.
  2. Embed the mesh into the base coat, making sure that at seams, it runs out not less than 2 inches.
  3. Smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles to make the surface flat

Holistic Contracting Tip: Add extra corner mesh for the edges and corners to help support and prevent damage.

Applying and Floating the Textured Finish Coat

Step 5: Applying the Finish Coat

EIFS Finish (Final) Coat

The finish coat is the final layer; in fact, it is the layer of stucco that provides color and texture. Different finishes or textures can be achieved to meet the desired aesthetic appeal to the exterior.

  1. Select the finish coat that you wish to use and mix it as per the manufacturer's specifications.
  2. Apply the finish coat using either trowel, or spray gun, according to the texture you would like to achieve.
  3. Smooth or texture the surface as necessary.

Holistic Contracting Tip: When finishing, apply the finish coat in small sections; this will allow a coat of finish to be applied evenly and uniformly.

Step 6: Curing and Inspection

Curing must occur once the finishing coat has been applied in the EIFS. Full bond of the material and thus maximum strength will be achieved.

  1. Let the EIFS system cure for the required time - depending on the weather and humidity -  usually 24-48 hours.
  2. Inspect the surface for any imperfections or areas that may need touch-ups.
